The diploma thesis concentrates on the analyses of the novels written by Richard Wright, Toni Morrison and Harper Lee. The first part of the thesis deals with the issue of racism generally, its development, displays and effects. Further, it deals with the particular novels, whose main theme is racism or slavery and position of African Americans in the society. These novels are Native Son, To Kill a Mockingbird and Beloved. Readers are acquainted with the lives of the authors and with some of the reasons which have led them to write the books; also with the summaries of the novels, their historical contexts and other specifications. The themes of the novels are analysed in the second part of the thesis. All of them deal with the topic of racism and its effects and even though each of the novel is unique and original, unifying elements can be found. The first area concerned in all novels is Rasist attitudes, the second area deals with the opposite - Anti-racist attitudes, the third comments on Attitudes of blacks towards whites and the last one describes The effect of racism and the guilt of society.
