The thesis investigates whether Czech students of English employ top-down strategies in speech perception. Three experiments were carried out dealing with sentence semantic context (1) and visual information (3) utilization for word recognition, and acoustic and visual information integration (2). The results suggest that the listeners are able to make use of semantic information for word recognition enhancement and that they integrate acoustic and visual information in the process of accommodation for task demands. On the other hand, no facilitating effect of visual information on word recognition was found which might, however, be caused by methodological shortcomings.
