Osteoarthritis is the most frequent disorder of synovial joints. It is a degenerative process for which the loss of cartilage (chondropatia) is characteristic, accompanied with secondary reparative changes - the formation of osteophytes and inflammatory changes in the synovial tissue. The progress of osteoarthritis is influenced by a number of factors which need not necessarily be connected with the age of the patient. They might, on the other hand, result from genetic predispositions, post-traumatic states etc. Primary physiotherapy aims to reduce the pain, improve the functionality and movability of the joint and slow down further progress of unfavourable changes. The opinions about the form of therapy vary. A positive influence of kinesiotherapy, most frequently in combination with pharmacotherapy, has already been proved. The use of acupuncture, hydrotherapy, and ortheses is still studied and discussed by the experts.
