The topic of this bachelor thesis is gastrointestinal atresia in newborns. Atresia means a congenital defect causing an interruption and blind-ending of an organ or its part. The thesis deals with an anatomy, and physiology of parts of the gastrointestinal tract, which are closely related to the consequences of the presence of atresia. Furthermore, an epidemiology, diagnosis, types, and surgical treatment of atresia are described. Then the thesis deals with short-term and long-term postoperative outcomes, which are the focus of subsequent therapy. Therapy is described according to the different difficulties that children with atresia face, especially gastroesophageal reflux, dysphagia, respiratory difficulties, and scarring.
