Rod orsej (Ficaria) z čeledi Ranunculaceae zahrnuje geofyty rozšířené na většině území Evropy a v přilehlých oblastech Asie a Afriky. Patří k taxonomicky obtížným skupinám, což je dáno především mimořádnou morfologickou variabilitou, k níž přispívá existence více ploidních úrovní (diploidní až hexaploidní), příležitostná hybridizace a značná fenotypová plasticita. The genus Ficaria (Ranunculaceae) is a group of geophytes that are widespread through most parts of Europe and adjacent areas of Asia and Africa. It represents a taxonomically challenging group with five cytotypes (diploid to hexaploid), occasional hybridization and remarkable phenotypic plasticity that contribute to generating extraordinary morphological variability. According to one taxonomic concept, based on morphological characters, the genus is considered monotypic with one species Ficaria verna and several subspecies. This concept was also used in this thesis, which aimed to contribute to the knowledge of morphological variability in the genus Ficaria, to assess the reliability of the given diagnostic characters and to try to find other characters that allow taxa determination. The subspecies calthifolia, chrysocephala, fertilis, ficariiformis, ficarioides, verna and the hybrid taxon F. ×sellii were the subject of the study. Live plants with a known ploidy level originating from different parts of the ranges of individual taxa grown in common garden conditions were studied. In addition to traditional morphometric methods, one of the methods of geometric morphometrics, elliptic Fourier analysis, was also used (for studying leaf shape). The results confirmed the suitability of many characters traditionally used for determination. Potential new characters that could facilitate determination when used in combination with other characters are, for example, thickness of the leaf blade, stem hairiness or shape of the achenes. Multivariate analyses showed only partial separation of the studied taxa. The subspecies calthifolia, fertilis, verna and probably also ficarioides are relatively well defined morphologically. On the other hand, the subspecies ficariiformis, which could not be distinguished from the subspecies verna even by a stepwise discriminant analysis (CDA), seems very doubtful. The results indicate an intermediate character of F. ×sellii between its parental taxa. Clinal variation in leaf shape has been demonstrated for the most widespread subspecies verna. For some taxa, the sample size was very limited (especially chrysocephala and ficarioides), making it impossible to reliably interpret the results. Minority ploidy levels for individual taxa were usually represented by a small number of individuals and therefore were not statistically compared. It is clear that solving the taxonomic problems of the genus Ficaria will still require a lot of effort. In order to understand the phylogenetic relationships, it will be necessary to employ molecular methods in particular, because morphometric methods alone are not sufficient for this purpose.
