The popularity of social network sites (SNS) is constantly growing together with the increasing body of research declaring its negative impacts on mental health of its users. Beside the descriptive characteristics the aim of the current study is to investigate FoMO, loneliness and existential frustration as possible predictors of problematic SNS use and expound their interconnections. Except the demographic questionnaire the chosen variables were assessed using six methods: Internet Addiction Test (IAT), Fear of Missing Out Scale (FoMOs), UCLA Loneliness scale (version 3), Social Networking Time Use Scale (SONTUS), Social Media Engagement Questionnaire (SMEQ) and Logo-test. The sample (N = 506) was recruited through an online questionnaire survey as part of quantitative study and consists of young adults with age ranging from 18 to 35 years. A significant association between FoMO and both loneliness and existential frustration and SNS use was found using the structural equation modelling (SEM) together with path analysis. A predicted significant effect of gender on FoMO was not confirmed. Age, partnership, and number of SNS accounts are rather neglectable indicators of problematic SNS use despite the statistically significant correlations found. The findings of the present study indicate that FoMO predicts both loneliness and existential frustration and SNS use and thus should be considered when planning preventive interventions for both teenagers and young adults.
