Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá životem a prací antverpského projektanta, obchodníka a podnikatele Gilberta van Schoonbeke. V průběhu svého krátkého života postavil v Antverpách několik ulic, pivovarů, nové městské opevnění a čtvrť Nieuwstad. Vedle toho se zasloužil o rozvoj tehdejší rašelinové kolonie v Gelderse Vallei (dnešní Veenendaal). V první části je popsána historie Antverp v 16. století a historie oblasti kolem dnešního Veenendaalu do příchodu Gilberta van Schoonbeke. Druhá část se věnuje přímo Van Schoonbekemu a jeho úspěchům. Třetí kapitola pojednává o rozdílných stylech datování používaných v 16. století a dnes. Uvědomění si těchto rozdílů je potřeba k pochopení poslední kapitoly, v níž se vysvětluje, proč různí historici používají jiné roky i když mluví o stejných dokumentech.This Bachelor´s thesis describes the activities of an Antwerp businessman, who was important not only for Antwerp but also for Veenendaal. Gilbert of Schoonbeke connected these two cities by working on some projects that contributed to their development. Working on the Antwerp Nieuwstad and new fortification for Antwerp, when he found out that the peat necessary as fuel in his kilns costed more than the wages for his workers. He came up with a solution. He decided to extract his own turf and bring it to Antwerp by a company of his own. He obtained for this plan permission from the ruling Habsburg Emperor Charles V. This way he made the building of the fortification for the city of Antwerp affordable and according to some historians founded the contemporary Veenendaal.
