The literature research of biologically active bioinorganic compounds, focusing on complex of tantalum and other Group 5 elements, was performed. It has been found out, that tantalum compounds, including complexes, have not been systematically studied for their biological activity. In this work, a series of electroneutral complexes of tantalum of the composition [Ta(5-Cp*)(O^N^O)Cl2] (13) and [Ta(O^N^O)2Cl2] (4) was prepared. Prepared complexes 13 and 4 differ in structural type and in number of chlorido ligands; Cp* = 1,2,3,4,5-pentametylcyclopentadienyl, HO^N^OH = pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (H2dpa), 2 hydroxyphenylsalicylaldimine or 2 hydroxy-3-ethoxy-phenylsalicylaldimine. The used O^N^O dianions are tridentate-coordinated as O,N,O-donor ligands within the studied complexes 14. Prepared compounds were characterised by C, H, N elemental analysis, mass spectrometry with positive electrospray ionization mode (ESI+), infrared, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopies. Aqueous chemistry of the representative complex [Ta(5-Cp*)(dpa)Cl2] (1) was studied by a combination of 1H NMR and ESI+ mass spectrometry and the obtained results indicated a rapid hydrolysis of the TaCl bonds, while both the Cp* and dpa ligands did not release from the structure of 1 under the used experimental conditions. These finding showed that the prepared half-sandwich Ta(V) complexes are perspective substances for further studies of biological activity (e.g. antitumor activity).
