This Master Thesis reports results concerning the influence of pH on the formation of zero-valent iron nanoparticles (NZVI) prepared by reduction driven by borohydride in aqueous media and performed in the presence of one of four chosen amino acids. The amino acids employed in this study different in the number of carboxylic groups present in their structure (glutamic acid vs. glutamine), the presence of guanidyl group (argnine) and/or thiol group (cystein). The as-prepared samples were characterized by means of Mössbauer spectroscopy. Morphologies of each sample were visualized by scanning electron microscopy. Specific surface area of the samples was determined and exploited in the evaluation of normalized reaction rates of trichloroethylene removal induced by NZVI.
