Pitfall traps became a popular method of catching epigeic animals of all different kinds soon after their introduction to scientific society. This thesis is focusing on a long-time neglected factor, influencing the size of catch and thus reliability of results obtained through this method ? the ability of the collected animals to recognize, avoid or self-rescue themselves from the traps. It is focusing on difference in activity and behaviour of six chosen species of invertebrae (Abax parallelus, Armadillidium vulgare, Cylindroiulus caeruleocinctus, Glomeris tetrasticha, Lithobius forficatus and Porcellio scaber) in proximity of a trap and the effect of formaldehyde solution, used in the trap as a preservative liquid, on this behaviour. In order to find out about these differences, we conducted an experiment in which the behaviour and activity of the animals were videotaped. The results obtained point on a major difference in activity of the species and ability to avoid being caught into the pitfall traps. Furthermore, it was found out that the formaldehyde works as a repellent for both of the two tested species of millipedes and one of the two species of isopods (P. scaber) and as an attractant for carabid bettle A. parallelus. There were found no statistically significant effects of formaldehyde solution on the behaviour of centipede L. forficatus and isopod A. vulgare.
