Hipoterapie je komplexní rehabilitační metoda, ve které jsou využívány podněty z koňského hřbetu, jež se přenáší na jezdce. Dochází k cílené aplikaci senzomotorických impulzů z koně na klienta dle jeho diagnózy a klinického obrazu. Hipoterapie musí být vždy indikovaná lékařem a prováděna odborně školeným fyzioterapeutem. Rehabilitační pracovník musí neustále sledovat klienta a korigovat jeho polohu, aby nedocházelo k možné patologické fixaci. Předpokladem účinné hipoterapie je správný sed na koni. Každý kůň má svou charakteristickou stavbu těla a typickou chůzi, což ho předurčuje jen pro určitý typ postižení.Hipotherapy (also known as riding therapy) is complex method of physical therapy utilizing stimuli via the horseback as they are transferred to the rider. The aim here is to apply motor-sensory impulses from a horse to the subject according to his or her diagnosis and the clinical picture. Hipotherapy must be referred by a physician and performed under supervision of a trained physiotherapist. The latter must monitor the subject continuously and adjust his/her position to prevent possible pathological fixation. A proper sitting position is an essential prerequisite to an effective hipotherapy. Every horse has a characteristic physique and typical way of stepping and that is why the method is suitable only for certain types of handicap.
