Následuje stručná historie zahraniční pomoci a představení různými autory identifikovaných limitů sektoru. The thesis deals with the motivation of humanitarian and development workers of People in Need working on foreign missions. The thesis is divided into two parts. The theoretical part introduces basic concepts related to the topic and objectives of the thesis. It deals with motivation and its theoretical anchoring, the distinction between humanitarian work and development cooperation is similarly conceived. This is followed by a brief history of foreign aid and an introduction to the limits of the sector identified by various authors. The theoretical part concludes with a presentation of the Czech context of foreign aid and the organisation People in Need itself. The second part of the thesis focuses on qualitative research, with the main research questions focusing on the motivation of workers and their perception of the limits of the foreign aid sector. The research results show that social motives and value systems play a crucial role in workers' motivation. The personal connection to the organisation and the perception of its prestige is also an important factor in the motivation of a significant number of staff. Instead of focusing on the perceived (mainly) operational and financial limits of the sector, workers often prefer to focus on the direct effect of their work - especially the positive impact of their activities on beneficiaries, but also on local colleagues in the context of capacity building - in order to maintain their motivation.
