Cílem práce bylo vytvořit překlad vybraných pasáží z románu Hermana Melvilla Pierre, or, the Ambiguities (1852) a opatřit jej doprovodnou analýzou, která zachycuje hlavní momenty daného translačního procesu. Kapitoly byly vybrány tak, aby ilustrovaly styl díla a translatologické problémy, které se při překladu tohoto díla vyskytují. Součástí komentáře je pojednání o celkové strategii překladu a literárně-estetický rozbor překládaného románu včetně pokusu o jeho zařazení do širšího literárního kontextu. Důraz je kladen na poetiku a singulární styl díla. Vlastní lingvistický komentář se zabývá konkrétními metodami a transformacemi, které jsou rozčleněny dle jednotlivých jazykových rovin, a je opatřen příklady z textu.The aim of this thesis was to translate selected chapters from the novel Pierre, or, the Ambiguities (1852) and describe the translation process in its main aspects. The chapters were selected in a way that they might illustrate the style of the novel and the translatological problems connected to the translation of this type of text. Part of the commentary is dedicated to the definition of strategy to this particular translation and also to literary analysis of the novel including its literary context. Special attention is paid to the poetics and singular style of the novel. The applied methods and transformations are dealt with in the linguistic part of the translation, which is divided according to the linguistic levels of text. Concrete examples are provided therein.
