Ve své diplomové práci jsem se zaměřila na kategoriální charakteristiku anglických verbálních substantiv a gerundií. V teoretické části jsem se pokusila shrnout historický vývoj anglické gerundiální formy. Zdrojem informací a příkladů pro praktickou část se stal The British National Corpus a The Coprus of Contemporary American English. Oba korpusy mi pomohly ilustrovat typické prostředky premodifikace a postmodifikace verbálních substantiv a gerundií. Korpusy mi též pomohly získat statistické informace týkající se distribuce verbálních substantiv a gerundií ve větě a jejich frekvence v americké a britské angličtině. Zvláštní důraz byl kladen na formu agensu výše zmíněných konstrukcí ve funkci podmětu, předmětu a předmětu po předložce.In my thesis I aimed at the categorial characteristics of English complex event nominals and verbal gerunds. In the theoretical part, I tried to sum up the historical development of an -ing form.. For the practical part, I used The British National Corpus and The Corpus of Contemporary American English. Both corpora helped me to illustrate the typical means of premodification and postmodification of verbaL gerunds and complex event nominals. At the same time, I used the corpora for the statistcs concerning the sentential distribution and occurence of complex event nominals and verbal gerunds in British and American English. Special attention was paid to the form of Agents of the above mentioned constructions within a sentence.
