Diplomová práce se zabývá úlohou překladu a mateřského jazyka ve výuce anglického jazyka. Jejím cílem je zjistit, zda by měl být mateřský jazyk přítomen v hodinách anglického jazyka a pokud ano, tak v jakém rozsahu. Teoretická část této práce popisuje různé přístupy k mateřskému jazyku v hodinách anglického jazyka, výuku obtížných jazykových jevů a důležitost práce se slovníkem. V praktické části jsou analyzovány aktivity, které žáci ve výuce dělali a také dotazníky získané od žáků a jejich učitelů.This thesis deals with the role of translation and the mother tongue in English language teaching. Its aim is to find out whether pupils' mother tongue should be present in the lessons, in what amount and if it is useful or undesirable. The theoretical part describes various teaching methods, approaches to the mother tongue involvement in English lessons, teaching of difficult language features and the importance of the work with dictionaries. In the practical part, the activities done with the pupils are analysed together with questionnaires answered by the teachers and their pupils.
