The goal of this thesis lies in analysis of Chinese characters used in male first names. Using a corpus of 1068 recommended two-characters male given names listed in a book "Good name, good fate: The newest handbook for choosing a name" I examined the characters in four different ways. First, I compared the characters with the "Table of General Standard Chinese Characters" and examined if commonly used characters are being used in Chinese names. Secondly, I examined number of strokes in these characters and made comparison with the stroke statistic listed in "Dictionary of Chinese Characters Information". Thirdly, I listed 22 most frequently used radicals and analyzed if they also represent the semantic components. In the last part of my analysis, I sorted the characters into 17 semantic categories and tried to clarify the importance of these characters used in Chinese boys´ names. The analysis showed that the results are in accordance with commonly known principles used when creating a Chinese name. Most of the characters were identified as the commonly used characters and the number of strokes was relatively low. Having examined the 22 most frequent radicals, in most cases they also represented the semantic components which was subsequently confirmed in the next part of the analysis when the characters with the same radical were concentrated around the same semantic motives. These motives somehow reflected common wishes that parents put into the names of their children, in this case boys´ names. Among them were for example wishes of attaining high moral qualities, becoming an educated and respectable person, having luck in life, being strong and masculine etc.
