The Dai national minority is a very important ethnic group in the Southeast Asia. They played significant role in history of Chinese border in Yunnan as well as in history Southeast Asia as whole. They created powerful states which influenced other ethnic groups in region. During history, Xishuangbanna became their major settlement and they ruled the other ethnic groups in this area. The kingdom called Moeng Lü had complicated relationship with other states in Southeast Asia and took part in a few war conflicts. After the Second World War Chinese government recognized the Dai people as one of the Chinese ethnic minority and established Xishangbanna as their autonomous area.
