Fanouškovství ovlivňuje utváření identity jedince a umožňuje únik před každodenním životem. The topic of this thesis is the research of the fans of The Lord of the Rings as a particular part of the audience. The aim of this work is to describe and to understand The Lord of the Rings fans´ behaviour. The work is based on the theoretical field of fan studies; it describes different views on fandom and its structure. During the research qualitative research methods were used: semi-structured interviews with 16 respondents and participating observation in a convention for the fans. On the basis of inductive logic it was found out that the fans are an active audience and not just in interpreting the meanings of media contents. Fans are characterized by typical ways of reception, relationships to other fans and to social reality. "Being a fan" influences the formation of an individual?s identity and enables an escape from everyday life. The further development of the identity results in abounding the theme and leads to the shift of the fandom from an interpretive community to a social group.
