Metodika: Testovaný soubor tvořilo 8 zdravých osob (4 ženy a 4 muži) průměrného věku 23,9 (+-2,32) let, výšky 171,5 (+-8,7) cm a tělesné hmotnosti 66,6 (+-11,03) kg. Introduction: Dynamic knee joint extensions and squats are commonly used exercises in quadriceps femoris muscle strength training. The muscle activity may vary depending on the exercise type. Aim: The aim of this study is to examine the differences in activity of superficial quadriceps femoris muscle heads among five squat types and between two dynamic knee extension alternatives during concentric, isometric and eccentric contractions. Methods: Eight young adults (4 men and 4 women, average age 23,9 +-2,32 years, height 171,5 +-8,7 cm, weight 66,6 +-11,03 kg) volunteered to participate in the study. Using surface electromyography, average muscle activity (vastus medialis, lateralis and rectus femoris) was measured and compared between default (unloaded shoulder-width stance parallel) squat and: narrow stance, wide stance, unstable squat and squat with closed eyes. The same comparison was done between seated and supine dynamic knee extensions. Furthermore, more detailed data analysis (with contraction phases divided into seven segments) was performed in the cases, where a statistically significant difference had been detected. Results: On average, during the unstable squat m. vastus medialis was less active and m. rectus femoris was more active than during the default squat. The other squat alternatives were not statistically different. All the measured quadriceps heads were on average more active during the seated dynamic knee extension than during the supine one. Conclusion: The quadriceps femoris muscle activity is different between the default and unstable squat. The same is true for the seated and supine positions during the dynamic knee extension.
