Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na komentovaný překlad studie Frequency vs. iconicity in explaining grammatical asymmetries od Martina Haspelmatha (2008). Práce se zabývá překladem odborného textu, který je doplněn komentáři vyjadřujícími se k translatologické problematice a k vybraným překladatelským postupům. Zahrnuta je i obecná charakteristika typologie angličtiny a češtiny a jejich základních vlastností. Vedle toho se text zabývá také změnami syntaktických struktur a systémovými rozdíly obou jazyků. Představena je osoba autora, jeho dosavadní působení, stěžejní práce a obecně metodologická témata. Pro tuto práci je stěžejní jeho zájem o otázky jazykového srovnání, hledání a vysvětlení univerzálií v jazykových systémech.The diploma thesis is concerned with the annotated translation of the study Frequency vs. iconicity in explaining grammatical asymmetries by Martin Haspelmath. The aim of the thesis is to translate this study and introduce it to Czech readers. Martin Haspelmath is one of the most influential contemporary figures of comparative linguistics and functionalist research of language universals. In this paper he argues that three types of iconicity, namely iconicity of quantity, iconicity of complexity and iconicity of cohesion, play no role in explaining grammatical asymmetries. Instead, formal asymmetries should be explained by frequency asymmetries and the economy principle. Chapter 4 of this thesis describes selected theoretical approaches and methods, which is used for the process of translation. It briefly characterizes the specifics of scientific text and some particular differences between Czech and English language. The rest of this chapter focuses on annotations and particular examples related to the translated text. The fifth chapter is the translation itself. The main purpose of the thesis is to translate and introduce the study of Martin Haspelmath Frequency vs. iconicity in explaining grammatical asymmetries. The paper focuses on the role of frequency in the diachronic explanation.
