The objective of this thesis is to provide a compariton of the vernacular form of Spanish language spoken on the Canary Islands with the standard literary form. The main goal is to present the substantial difference between the two forms. Hereafter, the most important features of the dialect are presented. To understand the causes of the disparity between the two variants of the language, it is essential to include at least a brief introduction to the history of the Canary Islands, its inhabitants and their language. The first chapter therefore describes the historical development of the Islands, and is followed by a section on the sources of information concerning the Guanches. The third chapter is focused on the Guanches, the native inhabitants of the Canary Islands, and their language. In the following part, the paper offers an overview of the influences from foreign languages, such as English and Portuguese, on Canarian Spanish. In the next chapter, the paper focuses on the language itself, and compares the vernacular with the standard form throughout the phonetical, morpho-syntactical and lexical layers of language. In the final part, a short fragment in Canarian Spanish is analysed. This thesis tries to introduce its readers to the differences between the two modalities and provide substantial information for the possible contact with the Canarian Spanish.
