The film follows the rise of two young women, the immoral Becky Sharp and the virtuous Amelia Sedley, as they climb the social ladder. Becky, the daughter of a drunken drawing master and a French chorus girl, is determined to secure herself a rich and high-born husband and will use anyone to achieve this. She deploys all of her wit, guile, and sexuality as she makes her way in the world. Amelia is the opposite, although a little self-obsessed, and thinks she is in love with the dashing Captain Osborne.
