Tato práce představuje čtenáři dvě Petrarkova latinská díla: De viris illustribus a Collatio inter Scipionem Romanum, Alexandrum Macedonem, Hanibalem Penum et Pyrrum Epyratorum regem, quis eorum prestatnitor fuerit. Obě díla spolu velice úzce souvisí, četné části Collatio najdeme reprodukované v De viris illustribus. Hlavní náplní diplomové práce je překlad Collatio a čtyř životopisů (Alexandra Velikého, Pyrrha, Hannibala a Scipiona Africana) z De viris illustribus z latiny do češtiny. Teoretická část se zabývá vznikem těchto děl a jejich místem v Petrarkově tvorbě. Na životopisech vojevůdců nepocházejících z římského prostředí pak diplomová práce ukazuje Petrarkovu snahu vyzdvihnout římské kvality i ctnosti a ukázat nadřazenost Říma. Ta je stvrzena životopisem Scipiona Africana, který pro Petrarku představuje jednu z vrcholných postav římského světa. Tato postava je vzorem výborného bojovníka, politika a zároveň vzorného občana plného ctností. To zapadá do Petrarkovy koncepce, která spočívala ve snaze sjednotit rozdrobenou Itálii a udělat z ní dědice a pokračovatele antické kultury a vzdělanosti.This thesis presents to the reader two Petrarch´s works: De viris illustribus a Collatio inter Scipionem Romanum, Alexandrum Macedonem, Hanibalem Penum et Pyrrum Epyratorum regem, quis eorum prestatnitor fuerit. Both of them are closely connected. Very big part of Collatio is often quoted in De viris illustribus. The man aim of thesis is the translation from Latin to Czech of Collatio and four biographies (Alexander the Great, Pyrrhus, Hannibal a Scipio Africanus) from De viris illustribus. The theoretical part of this thesis is focused on genesis of these works and on their place in the Petrarch´s production. The thesis shows Petrarch´s effort to elevate the Roman qualities and virtue and demonstrate the superiority of the Romans on the biographies of foreign (not in Rome born) commanders. These qualities are confirmed by the biography of Scipio African, who presents for Petrarch one of the greatest personalities of the ancient Roman world. This man is not just a perfect commander, but also a great politician and at the same time a citizen full of virtue. This fully support Petrarch´s conception of unification of Italy and making from Italy a full heritor of ancient culture.
