The thesis explores the role of mindfulness, self-compassion and non-attachment to the self in Gestalt therapy. We introduce these concepts derived from Buddhist psychology and demonstrate their relevance for mental health. Furthermore, we present a broad area of theoretical background in which Gestalt therapy and Buddhist psychology coincide. Based on these theoretical intersections we examine the effect of Gestalt therapy on the client's mindfulness, self-compassion, and non-attachment to the self, and examine the association of client-achieved changes in these variables with the effect of therapy (change in perceived difficulties). Data were collected from 29 respondents who completed online self-report questionnaires before and after attending 10 sessions with a Gestalt psychotherapist. Results show that the Gestalt therapy intervention develops self-compassion, non-attachment to the self, and partially mindfulness, while the resolution of the clients' perceived difficulties was mainly associated with a reduction in clinging to ideas, thoughts, and feelings about the self and with the development of an accepting attitude toward all perceived phenomena. These are novel findings that are unprecedented in psychotherapy research. We hope that they will contribute to understanding the nature of psychotherapeutic change and inspire further research to test the role of mindfulness and related concepts in psychotherapy.
