This master's thesis analysed a hypothetical causal relationship between the fragmentation of the party system and voter behaviour in 15 European post-communist countries. The relationship was examined in selected cases of elections to the lower houses of local parliaments between 2001 and 2018. Based on the work of American sociologist Barry Schwartz and other theoretical research, which deals with the effects of cognitive overload, it was assumed that an increasing number of candidate parties will lead to an increase in abstention. Logistic hierarchical regression and graphs of predicted probabilities were used to verify the theoretical assumptions. The main prediction, the relationship between the number of electoral parties and non-participation, was confirmed by the results of the research part of the work. The hypothesis assuming an increased probability of non-participation due to the higher number of parties for individuals who do not declare a closer relationship to any political party was also confirmed. On the contrary, the assumptions about the effect of change in the number of running parties and the potential effect of the degree of political polarization were not confirmed.
