This thesis focuses on the media discourse of Czech online news sites whose contents discuss or mention the Roma minority. By analyzing the selected news sites we intend to discover whether Czech media influences the poor position of this minority in Czech society. Our analysis is based primarily on the theory of critical discourse analysis, because certain approaches within this discipline address the relationship of discourse and thought. Stated more specifically, how discourse influences the thinking and opinions of its receivers. Additionally it builds upon the approach to CDA, as presented by Teun van Dijk, which highlights the relationship of discourse, media, and the spread of racism. The thesis focuses specifically on discourse (language, speech, and the linguistic aspect of the articles), complex strategy, and the structure of the articles and how they influence the building of public opinion regarding Roma. Assuming that the news can contribute to the spread and legitimization of "new racism," the goal of this work is to present both the image of the Roma population as its presented in the selected news outlets from the year 2015 and also to point out the ways in which the media and news contribute to the spread of racial and ethnic inequality in society. The conclusion of the analytical section summarizes the results of this research.
