První polovina práce nastiňuje jeho biografii a shrnuje témata a problémy, kterým se během své celoživotní politické dráhy věnoval. Nosným tématem práce je pak Adámkův zájem o tzv. "sociální otázku" a o zvelebení podmínek českého řemeslnictva, obchodnictva, rolnictva a také dělnictva za účelem jejich podpory, ať již vzhledem ke konkurenci ze strany velkých kapitalistů či jiných národností (v prvé řadě Němců). Za pomoci konkretizování a ilustrování Adámkovy politické činnosti v oblasti sociálního zákonodárství a živnostenské otázky je v závěru práce formulován obecnější smysl a hlavní záměry politikova úsilí na půdě zemského a říšského sněmu. Zcela stranou nezůstal ani politikův přínos v dalších oborech jeho působnosti a také jeho prioritní zájem o rodné město Hlinsko a region. Práce má díky svému zaměření interdisciplinární ráz. Kromě historie, sociologie a politologie jsou v ní reflektovány též soudobé závěry ekonomického a právnického rázu. This diploma thesis deals with a life and work of Karel Adámek (1840-1918), a member of the Austro-Hungarian Imperial Council (i.e. of the Austro-Hungarian Parliament), a member of the Bohemian Municipal Assembly as well as the Hlinecko district Mayor. The study especially focuses on Adámek's thoughts concerning contemporary social problems from the perspective of the historical context of Austria-Hungarian Empire and especially in comparison to some other politicians and thinkers dealing with the so called "social question". Because of its main topic, the work inherently uses interdisciplinary approach making use of the latest research and findings of historians, sociologists, economists as well as studies form the field of politics and law. The core part of the thesis deals Adámek's relations and opinions on social problems and social politics. The first chapter of this part provides some general background to the topic (namely historical roots of social thinking, Adámek's contemporaries also dealing with the social question and particular legislative measures trying to solve some of the social problems in Austro-Hungarian Empire at turn of the 19th and 20th centuries). The following part of the thesis then illustrates Adámek's political activity within the field of social legislation and small tradesmen competitiveness problem. Through analyses of some of Adámek's published works as well as with the help of concrete practical examples of Adámek's contribution to social politics, the thesis aims to summarize some of the main goals of the politician's whole-life striving in the Bohemian Municipal Assembly and the Austro-Hungarian Parliament. References are made also to his personal initiative in the Hlinecko District. Karel Adámek's opinions on the ways that wellbeing of Czech middle and lower classes can be achieved are evaluated not only on the grounds of his membership in the Young Czech Party (also called National Liberal Party), but also in comparison to other contemporary social thinkers.
