This work examines the development of the Female Gothic genre from its beginning to the present day. The first part of the work focuses on illustrating the social and cultural conditions under which the Gothic originated, the sources of inspiration and the works of literary theory that influenced its formation and the specific features that differentiate the Female Gothic from the Male Gothic. The second part focuses on analysis of the most important works of the Female Gothic to describe how the genre has changed during the course of two centuries and to define the most common features of the genre.This work examines the development of the Female Gothic genre from its beginning to the present day.
