Práca sa zaoberá otázkou dôstojnosti trpiaceho človeka, hodnotou ľudského života a významom utrpenia pre človeka. Je rozdelená do dvoch častí. Prvá časť je zameraná na otázku dôstojnosti človeka ako stvorenej osoby, zaoberá sa vzťahmi človeka k Bohu, človeka k človeku a človeka k stvoreniu. Všíma si pôvod utrpenia, jeho stálu prítomnosť v ľudských dejinách a postoj človeka k utrpeniu. Kľúčovým momentom zmeny chápania utrpenia je vlastné utrpenie Krista, Božieho Syna. Druhá časť si všíma vzťah pápežov Jána Pavla II. a Benedikta XVI. k trpiacim. Najskôr sa zameriava na utrpenie v živote pápežov, potom si všíma ich postoje k chápaniu utrpenia v dnešnej spoločnosti a zvlášť k chápaniu hodnoty ľudského života. Poukazuje na dôležité výzvy pre Cirkev ako sú obrana ľudského života, solidarita, evanjelizácia i na dôležitosť trpiacich v Cirkvi, pre Cirkev i pre celú spoločnosť.The paper addresses the issue of the dignity of the suffering man, the value of human life and the meaning of suffering for the man. It is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on the question of the dignity of the man as a created being, elaborates on the relationships of man to God, man to man and man to the creation. It observes the origin of the suffering, its constant presence in the human history and the attitude of the man to suffering. The key moment in the change of how we understand suffering if the own suffering of Christ, the Son of God. The second part notes the relationship of the recent popes John Paul II. and Benedict XVI. towards those who suffer. Firstly, it focuses on the suffering in the lives of popes, then it discerns their attitude towards the understanding of the suffering in todays society and especially towards the understanding of value of the human life. It points to the important challenges for the Church, such as defending the human life, solidarity and evangelisation. It also points Church towards the importance of those suffering for the Church as well as for the society.
