The diploma thesis examines the literary works of Jack London and Stephen Crane from the viewpoint of potential development of (primarily male) personality in the society. Its aim is to explore the psychology hidden behind traditional deterministic and naturalistic reading of the work of both authors, and to reveal a common theme of development of the individual from self-centered individualism towards individuality - a unique and connected personality. The thesis describes the patterns and conditions of this transition in the works of the two authors, while also considering the situation in the modern society.
