In the intensely agriculturally used landscape of Haná, small forest units are among the elements that significantly increase the heterogeneity of the otherwise monotonous landscape. This work describes the influence of the edge of such a forest fragment on the community of the surface-dwelling invertebrates. The aim of this study was to find out if epigeon communities in the forest and in the field are somehow affected, how their abundance changes at different distances from the ecotone and what their trends are in their activity during the season. For this purpose, 40 pitfall traps were installed in four transects across the deciduous forest and beet field ecotone, each 10 m apart. The traps were selected from mid-April to mid-October 2021. A total of 6428 individuals of the monitored groups (Araneae, Opiliones, Formicidae, Diplopoda, Chilopoda, Oniscidea, Staphylinoidae, Carabidae) were caught. Ground beetle (Carabidae) material was determined to the species level. 13 species of ground beetles were caught, the most numerous of which were Anchomenus dorsalis, Pterostichus melanarius and Abax parallelepipedus. Significant differences were found in their distribution across the ecotone. While A. parallelepipedus is demonstrably a forest species, P. melanarius clearly prefers fields. Based on the results, the most abundant ground beetle, A. dorsalis, can be identified as an ecotone specialist, which abundance decreases in both directions from the ecotone. Differences were also found in the activity during the year. While A. dorsalis is a species with typically spring activity, P. melanarius and A. parallelepipedus, like another abundant species Harpalus rufipes, have a peak of activity in August. The obtained results generally agree with the conclusions of similar studies and thus confirm the importance of landscape heterogeneity for biodiversity and can become an argument for building a green network in the agricultural landscape.
