Listeria monocytogenes is a ubiquitous, highly resistant pathogenic bacterium that causes listeriosis. Listeriosis is a zoonosis which means that it causes disease in both, humans and animals. Listeriosis can have various courses depending on the host's immune system. In healthy individuals, infections can occur asymptomatically or in the form of gastroenteritis. While in immunodeficient individuals, it can mean a fatal risk. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics, however, it must be recognized and identified on time. For its identification are commonly used cultivation methods. Nonetheless, modern methods such as immunochemical, molecular genotypic or molecular phenotypic are used for faster identification.
