Tato práce se zabývá fenoménem magie v prostředí Tolkienovy Středozemě. Vychází z teorií Jamese Frazera, Bronislawa Malinowskeho, Stanleyho Tambiaha a Mircey Eliada, které v tomto kontextu reflektuje a ukazuje jejich slabiny i silné stránky. Metodologicky přistupuje k Tolkienovu dílu jako k souboru narativních pramenů, které interpretuje. V první části se věnuje samotné podstatě magie ve Středozemi, která je podle autora nejblíže přírodnímu principu. Zabývá se také propojením této magie s mytologií zkoumaného světa. Toto propojení je minimální, ne-li neexistující. Druhá kapitola se věnuje specifickým postupům, principům a příkladům magických jevů. Magie ve Středozemi se podle autora dělí na "rychlou" a magii technologických postupů a je řízena principem přenosu a koncentrace, které autor vytváří úpravou Frazerových zákonů dotyku a podobnosti. Poslední kapitola se zabývá vnímáním a postavením magie napříč kulturami Středozemě. Ukazuje, že pro obyvatele Středozemě je magie jevem očekávaným, ale stále slouží jako alternativa k řešení problémů, jak popisuje Malinowski. V závěru se autor vrací k teoriím, ze kterých vycházel a hodnotí jejich relevanci pro tento specifický terén. Je poukázáno na nutnost některé koncepce upravovat podle potřeb terénu, ale přiznává jim širší správnost nezávisle na specifikách daného výzkumu.The topic of this thesis is the fact of magic in Tolkien's Middle-earth. It is based on theories of George Frazer, Bronislaw Malinowski, Stanley Tambiah and Mircea Eliade, which are reflected in this context and their strengths and weaknesses are pointed out. Methodologically Tolkien's works are considered as a compendium of narrative histories, which are then interpreted. First part is focused on the essence of magic in Middle-earth, which according to the author, is best described as a natural principle. Attention is also paid to connection of magic and myths of this world. This connection is minimal if not non-existent. The second chapter turns to specific methods, principles and examples of magical phenomena. Magic in the Middle-earth is, according to the author, divided into "quick" and magic of technological practices and is governed by principles of transference and concentration, which author creates by adjusting Frazer's laws of contact and similarity. Last chapter talks about the perception and status of magic across cultures of the Middle-earth. It shows that for inhabitants of the Middle-earth, magic is phenomenon expected, but still serves the purpose of problem solving in accordance with Malinowski's views. Conclusion returns to used theories and evaluates their relevance for this specific terrain. The need for adjusting some concepts to better suit the situation is pointed out, but over-all the theories are valid regardless of specifics of given research.
