The aim of this thesis is to define isekai as one complete genre using the already existing, albeit needlessly restricting, categories of popular Japanese literature dealing with the crossing of the main character from a 'real world' to a 'different world'. This thesis also aims to familiarize the reader with the genre's history and to prove, based on an analysis of select literary works, that its roots, in the form of recurring themes and motifs, reach all the way to the inception of Japanese literature. Next, these themes and motifs will be expanded upon and defined in detail with the help of select popular and influential works of Japanese contemporary literature. Based on them will be the most common conventions of the isekai genre in its current form, with the goal of complementing its basic definition.
