Cílem práce je vypracovat životopis brigádního generála Jana Šmoldase, rodáka z olomouckých Hodolan. Šmoldas, narozený roku 1897, se během první světové dostal do ruského zajetí a následně do československých legií. Roku 1920 se na palubě lodi Sheridan vrátil přes Terst do Československa. Jako dělostřelecký důstojník působil nadále v československé armádě. Během Protektorátu byl dvakrát vězněn gestapem, poprvé za účast v moravské odbočce Obraně národa, podruhé za (domnělou) spoluorganizaci revolučního národního výboru v Olomouci. Po skončení války byl stejně jako celý důstojnický sbor prověřován ze strany komunistické vlády a v roce 1951 byl v hodnosti brigádního generála poslán do výsluhy. Svůj život dožil v Olomouci, kde zemřel roku 1986.The goal of this thesis is creating a biography summarizing the life course of brigadier general Jan Šmoldas, a Czechoslovak military officer and a participant of the first and second Czechoslovak resistence during both the WWI and WWII. Born in 1897 on the outskirts of Olomouc, he was drafted in 1915 to Austro-Hungarian army, and after spending a year in a POW camp in central Russia, he joined the Czechoslovak legions. After his return home in 1920, he decided to stay in the army and as an artillery officer with an excellent rating his pre-war career culminated in the rank of lieutenant colonel as a comander deputee of 107th Artillery Regiment. With the fall of the Second Republic and the creation of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, Šmoldas left the army and started working with the resistance group Obrana národa, which got him arrested in 1940 and sentenced to 18 months in prison. In 1944, he was incarcerated yet again, this time for a fictional cooperation with another resistance organization called Národní výbor. After the war, he came back to the army and served at several different positions until 1951, when he was retired as a politically non-reliable person. Unfortunately, in three years time he suffered a stroke and went mute and paralysed on the right half of his body. In this state he managed to live on for another 32 years. Eventually, he broke his hip, came down with pneumonia and passed away on 30th December 1986.
