Urbanised areas differ from other areas with respect to their environmental conditions. Ecological and behavioural adaptations have evolved in urbanised populations as a reaction to changes resulting from the colonisation of urban environments. Due to the concurrent existence of urbanised and original populations, common blackbird (Turdus merula) is often used as a model species for studies about influence of urbanization. Adaptations to different environmental conditions also influence how the birds use space. The size of the home range is species-specific. However, the factors that can influence its size are common across all bird species. In my study, I explored whether the differences in home range size in the population of urban common blackbird correlate with individual factors, morphological features and the degree of urbanisation. Using telemetry, I studied the size of the home range of 97 individuals between 2015 and 2017. I did not find a conclusive difference in the home ranges sizes between sexes or age categories. The results show that distance from the city centre does not influence the size of the home range of common blackbirds. However, the size of the home range was positively correlated with the average number of people in the studied area, which is another indicator of the degree of urbanisation. Conversely, differences in the measured morphological features were not correlated with variation in the home range. The hypothesis that birds in urbanised areas who had worse physical conditions have smaller home ranges was therefore not confirmed. The results of the study indicate that behavioural adaptations play the largest role in how space is used by the birds in cities because the home range size was influenced by the average number of pedestrians in the area, but not by the distance from the city centre.
