In this thesis, five Dy(III) complexes and one Gd(III) complex were prepared and their structures were determined using X-ray diffraction or X-ray powder diffraction in one case. Three of Dy(III) complexes were characterized using magnetic measurements and theoretical calculations as single-molecule magnets. For those complexes, radial effective charge method calculations were used to prove if this theoretical model can simulate magnetic properties with comparable accuracy as CASSCF method calculations. For Gd(III) complex, it has been proven to show magnetocaloric properties and therefore is usable as magnetic coolant.
