Tato diplomová práce byla zaměřena na překlad anglicky psaných esejů Stuarta Halla. Jmenovitě se jedná o díla Staré a nové identity, staré a nové etnicity a Kulturní identita a diaspora. V práci jsou oba tyto překlady okomentovány, a to jak z hlediska překladatelských postupů, použitých syntaktických struktur, grafické stránky práce a specifické terminologie. Překlad první z esejů je také srovnán s již publikovaným překladem M. Musilové a jsou zde navržena vlastní řešení podle autorky této práce. V samostatné kapitole jsou také uvedena specifika překladu z anglického jazyka do češtiny a v úvodu práce je stručně představen i samotný autor výchozí textů, Stuart Hall. Podstatnou část pak tvoří samotné překlady dvou zvolených esejů do češtiny.This diploma thesis focuses on a translation of two essays written by Stuart Hall and their commentary. The given essays are 'Old and New Identities, Old and New Ethnicities' and 'Cultural Identity and Diaspora'. The aim of the thesis is to introduce two translations of these essays and comment on the translatological methods which have been used. The first chapter includes an introductions and a brief summary of Stuart Hall's life, his academic work and his still present influence on today's cultural studies. The second chapter follows, focusing on theoretical backgrounds of the translation, namely the functional approach to translating, stylistics in English and Czech environment and the characteristics of an essay with an overview of Hall's personal writing style. The chapter concludes with the typology of languages based on Skalička. While the second chapter described the theoretical framework of the translation, the third chapter focuses on more practical examples of the translating process. The methods used for this thesis are described in more detail, followed by examples comparing English and Czech texts. The particular subchapters each deal with a specific topic, such as the terminology, syntax and comparing the first Czech translation of Hall's essay 'Old and New Identities, Old and New Ethnicities' with the translation of the author of this thesis. Chapter four are the translations themselves. The main purpose of this thesis is to introduce a translation of a part of Stuart Hall's work which has not been translated to Czech yet. It also suggests some possible alternative solutions to the already existing translations. The translations in this thesis can be found useful by students of British recent history, cultural studies, sociology, linguistics and politology.
