The aim of the Master's thesis Labeling of Mental Illness is to focus on the existence of mental illness through labeling theory, part of a reactive view of social deviation. The theoretical framework consists of the labeling theory and the theory of primary and secondary deviation by Edwin Lemert (1951), Howard Becker (1966), and Thomas Scheff (1970). According to them, the deviant, or mentally ill person, is someone who is labeled as mentally ill by the society in a certain situation and context. Although there is no certainty or permanence in determination and categorizing of mental illnesses, psychiatry is able to divide people into groups of healthy or ill people. The central research question for qualitative fieldwork, which forms the practical part of the thesis, is this one: What does the label "mentally ill" bring for the labeled person? It shows that it is not just the person's mental state that is affected by psychiatric treatment, but that the acquired label also affects other aspects of study participants' life, such as interpersonal relationships, self-perception, social status, or work opportunities.
