Bakalárska práca skúma televíznu sériu The Knick (Cinemax, 2014) predovšetkým ako ambiciózne estetické dielo. Metódy formalizmu, neoformalizmu, teórií televíznej narácie a štýlu, teórie žánru lekárskej drámy i teórie televízneho brandingu uplatňuje tak, aby ich dôsledným prepojením vznikol konzistentný prístup prinášajúci jasné výsledky. Fenomén tzv. quality TV je v nej chápaný ako metažáner, ktorý má voči normám prvotného žánru deformačný potenciál. Analýza taktiež zahŕňa i pozorovanie atypického zvukového dizajnu série. Prioritou bakalárskej práce nie je ani tak postihnutie špecifík novosti série na televíznom trhu, ako zmapovanie jej formálneho pôdorysu v celej svojej komplexnosti a "rozbitie skleneného brnenia všednosti" v duchu neoformalistickej doktríny.This thesis examines television series The Knick (Cinemax, 2014) primarily as an ambitious aesthetic work. The methods of formalism, neoformalism, theories of television narration and style, theory of hospital drama genre and theory of television branding are applied in a way which allows their thorough conjunction and creates consistent approach that leads to clear results. The phenomenon of quality TV is understood as a meta genre, which has deformative potential towards norms of the main genre. The analysis also includes observation of the atypicall sound design of the series. The main interest of the bachelor thesis is not as much in recounting the specifics of the series' novelty on television market, as in mapping its formal system in all its complexity, and "breaking the glass armor of familiarity" in consonance with the neoformalist doctrine.
