Cieľom diplomovej práce je odhaliť obraz Číny prezentovaný románmi Ties That Bind, Ties That Break, The Binding Chair a Tajný vejár zameranými na fenomén zväzovania nôh čínskych žien a preskúmať, či sa ich spisovateľky Lensey Namioka, Kathryn Harrison a Lisa See dokázali vyhnúť zobrazeniu orientalistických prvkov. Prvá teoretická časť pozostáva z predstavenia orientalizmu a vymedzenia termínov asociovaných s Orientom a pokračuje priblížením problematiky zväzovania nôh i oboznámením so životmi spisovateliek. Druhá časť sa venuje obsahovej analýze zachytených tém v románoch so zámerom vykreslenia obrazu Číny, pričom najväčšiu pozornosť pripisuje rozoberanej praktike. Vzniknutý materiál je skúmaný s nadobudnutými vedomosťami z teoretickej časti. Diplomová práca v závere ponúka získaný obraz Číny z románov a ukazuje miesta, v ktorých sa odzrkadlilo orientalistické myslenie spisovateliek. The goal of the diploma thesis is to reveal an image of China presented by the novels Ties That Bind, Ties That Break, The Binding Chair and Snow Flower and the Secret Fan focusing on the footbinding phenomenon in China. It also examines if the authors Lensey Namioka, Kathryn Harrison and Lisa See avoided using Orientalist elements. The first, theoretical part, introduces orientalism, defines key concepts related to the Orient, seeks to bring the footbinding phenomenon closer to its readers and provides information on the lives of the authors. The second part is dedicated to content analysis of topics depicted by the novels with the intention of capturing the image of China, and focusing on the footbinding practice in particular. The obtained material is examined using the information from the theoretical part. The outcome of the thesis projects a profound image of China as depicted by Western novels written in English revealing the authors' Orientalist thinking.
