Tato diplomová práce se zabývá srovnávací analýzou anglických překladů dramatu R. U. R., jehož autorem je Karel Čapek. Její zpracování bere v úvahu formu dramatického textu, jehož specifické rysy vyžadují odlišný přístup v případě převodu do cizího jazyka. Kritéria, která jsou použita v analytické části této práce, jsou zvolena s ohledem na Čapkův jedinečný styl, který se projevuje ve všech rovinách tohoto dramatického díla. Teoretickou část zahajuje kapitola uvozující do problematiky překladu dramatického textu. Poté následují dvě kapitoly, jež poskytnou kontext pro hlubší pochopení díla R. U. R. a jeho pozdější analýzu. Kapitola o inspiracích zmiňuje některé vlivy, jež svým dílem mohly přispět k finální podobě R. U. R., a stručné představení dramatu přibližuje nejen jeho děj, ale i přítomné postavy a jejich role ve hře. V další kapitole je zmíněn kulturně-historický kontext, do kterého je drama poprvé uvedeno ve Velké Británii a Spojených státech, a nechybí zmínka o osobnostech, jež se na zahraničním úspěchu R. U. R. neodmyslitelně podílely. Teoretickou část pak uzavírá kapitola stručně se pozastavující nad jednotlivými překladateli. Analytická část sestává celkem ze tří tematických okruhů podle kritérií, která budou v uvedené části diskutována. Na úvod každého z okruhů jsou daná kritéria nejprve vysvětlena a zasazena do kontextu jejich přítomnosti v R. U. R. Samotná analýza je postavena na vhodných příkladech srovnávajících původní text a zhotovené verze překladu. První okruh diskutuje R. U. R. z hlediska jeho obsahové a jazykové formy. Po obsahové stránce jsou u překladů zohledněny zejména přídavky, redukce a přítomné obsahové odchylky. Analýza jazykové stránky vychází z Čapkovy práce s humorem, jazykovými hříčkami a zvláštnostmi. Následující okruh se zabývá překladem dramatických postav, jejich potlačením a posuny při charakterizaci v jednotlivých verzích. Analýzu uzavírá poslední část, jež se zabývá převodem vedlejšího textu dramatu. Závěrem práce bude provedeno shrnutí a zhodnocení získaných poznatků, které nabídne přehled o situaci dostupných překladů reprezentujících dílo v zahraničí.This diploma thesis aims to provide a comparative analysis of the existing English translations of Karel Čapek's R.U.R. The undertaken analysis takes into consideration the distinctive form of a dramatic text which requires a specific approach during translating into a foreign language. The selection of the criteria used for the analytical part of this work is based on Karel Čapek's idiosyncratic writing style which is demonstrated throughout the discussed dramatic work. The opening chapter of the theoretical part provides an introduction to the issue of translating dramatic texts. The next two chapters are intended to deepen the understanding of R.U.R. and to contribute to its later analysis. A chapter discussing possible inspirations behind R.U.R. suggests some factors which may have contributed to the process of creation and the final form of R.U.R., while the brief summary of the play not only highlights the plot, but also the characters of the play and their roles within it. The next chapter introduces the cultural-historical context into which Čapek's play had entered in Great Britain and the United States. In addition, this chapter also mentions two personalities who played the most essential role in the success of the play abroad. The closing chapter of the theoretical part briefly discusses each of the play's translators. The analytical part is divided into three sections discussing a number of criterias. At the beginning of each part, the criteria is briefly discussed within the context of R.U.R. The analysis is composed with relevant examples providing a comparison between the original text and existing translated versions. The first section is concerned with the translations in terms of the transcribed content and form of language used. With regards to the content, the analysis focuses mainly on andditions, reductions and changes in content present in the translations. The analysis of use of language is demonstrated on Karel Čapek's characteristic use of humor, language humor and other language specialties. The second section discusses the way dramatic characters are presented in the translations. Possible supressions, omissions and changes in characteristics are examined. The last section is dedicated to the translation of stage directions. The thesis will conclude with a summary of findings and evaluations which will hopefully provide a better insight into the character of current English translations representing the drama abroad.
