This thesis deals with major issues of baby talk - speech directed primarily to children. In the first chapter, we present the importance of studying this linguistic phenomenon which plays a fundamental role in the language acquisition and development. The second part is dedicated to the terminology used to refer to this phenomenon, its definition, constitutive elements and nature, origin, functions, forms, variability and universality. It also explains why it is used in the interaction with children. The last chapter focuses on some of the secondary uses of baby talk, that is, the incorporation of baby talk in the speech directed to interlocutors that are not children. The thesis includes transcriptions of field recordings accompanied by a commentary.
