Výzkum nepotvrdil souvislost mezi mírou depresivity a neuroticismu a školním prospěchem u studentů SOŠ s maturitou a učebních oborů bez maturity. The aim of this thesis is to find a link between the extent of depressiveness and neuroticism and the success of students at Gymnaziums and vocational schools, both those that offer secondary school-leaving examination and those which do not, in the Czech Republic. In the theoretical part, selected current empirical knowledge is summarised regarding the link among depressiveness and neuroticism and the influence of depressiveness on the school results of adolescents. Recent research shows that depressiveness during pubescence and adolescence rises significantly, particularly in girls. Among the main symptoms is a deterioration of cognitive functions which is related to a deterioration of school results. Based on the knowledge summarised in the theoretical part, there were 11 hypotheses formulated. The validity of the hypotheses was verified on a group of 374 adolescents, who were chosen from various types of schools in the Zlín Region. Apart from the hypotheses, the research also focuses on looking for the answers to 3 research questions. In order to obtain data the following methods were chosen: the method of the standardised questionnaire survey of depressiveness - Beck depression Inventory BDI-II; the questionnaire N-5 regarding neuroticism; and a questionnaire to find assessment data from two consecutive school reports. The data was statistically processed with the STATISTICA 10Cz programme. The research confirmed a link between depressiveness and school results of students from Gymnazium; a link between neuroticism and school results of students from Gymnazium; a very strong linear dependency between depressiveness and neuroticism in all groups; a statistically significant difference in depressiveness as well as neuroticism among students of various types of schools; and a higher level of both depressiveness and neuroticism in the group of girls compared to the group of boys. The research did not confirm a link among depressiveness, neuroticism and school results among students of vocational schools, neither with those which offer a secondary school-leaving examination2, ,nor with those which do not. Depressive boys reach higher scores compared to non-depressive ones in the following items: self-dislike, worthlessness and indecisiveness. Depressive girls reach higher scores compared to non-depressive ones in the following items: punishment feelings, worthlessness, self-dislike and crying. The research is a general or a pilot study because the generalisation of the data obtained is limited mainly by the choice of the research sample. "Gymnázium" is a type of secondary school which provides students with general knowledge, puts strong emphasis on academic learning and providing advanced secondary education. It aims at intensive preparation for further studies and enrolling at universities and technical colleges. It is comparable to British grammar schools or U.S. preparatory high schools. "Vocational schools with and without secondary school-leaving examination" are secondary types of institutions providing students with the vocational education and skills they need in order to perform the tasks of a particular job. Some students graduate with a secondary-school leaving examination "matura", while others take a lower level of final examination.
