This Bachelor thesis focuses on Mayan symbolism and its analysis in the national writing of the K?iché tribe called Popol Vuh with the influence on modern Latin American literature. A Guatemalan writer Miguel Ángel Asturias in his short story book Las Leyendas de Guatemala uses the symbolism and so creates a complex web made of impressions, mythological scenes and religious symbols where the past and the presence, the matter and the mind are mingled together and where different and partial religions undergo the only, all-embracing and universal truth. The aim of the thesis is to analyze these symbols not only from the Mayan perspective, but also from the Christian one and to understand the universal truth that influences humanity regardless of their race or religion.
