This diploma thesis is concerned with the development of vampire and vampire fiction in the English literature of the 19th century. The main focus will be on the themes of gender and sexual identity which was a taboo topic. The analyses show that these topic emerge in Polidori's The Vampyre, only to be condemned in Varney, the Vampire and again reinvented in the Victorian period.
