Práce se soustřeďuje na téma lesbismus a coming outu v americké jižanské literatuře v druhé polovině 20. století. Nejprve představuji základní homosexuální terminologii, koncept lesbismus v reálném životě i v literatuře a důvody, kvůli kterým na Jihu převládala homofobie. Na základě analýzy vybraných děl dvou jižanských lesbických autorek, Rity Mae Brownové a Dorothy Alliosnové, potom charakterizuji způsob přijetí lesbismu na Jihu. Obě autorky jsou v úvody představeny, včetně svého díla a životního osudu. V hlavní analýze se potom soustředím na určitě typické atributy nebo tradice života na Jihu a stavím je do protikladu s lesbismem. Z díla Rity Mae Brownové jsem zvolila román Rubínová džungle, který vyšel roku 1973 a stal se nejznámějším světovým lesbickým románem vůbec. Druhým zvoleným dílem je román Alma Mater z roku 2001, ale neopomíjím ani další její lesbická díla jako Její den nebo Venušina touha. Dorothy Allisonová za svou tvorbu napala dva romány, a to Bastarda z Karolíny a Jeskynní lidé, které jsou oba součástí mé analýzy. Zatímco lesbické protagonistky Rita Mae Brownová představují prototypické lesby procházející coming outem, navštěvující gay bary nebo plné revolučních idejí, Dorothy Allisonová více experimentuje a představuje lesby z pohledu lesbického románu v atypických situacích. Práce se snaží dokázat, že lesbická literatura existovala i na Jihu a snaží se vystihnout její charakteristické aspekty.The thesis concentrates on the topic of lesbianism and coming out in the American Southern literature in the second half of the 20th century. Firstly I introduce basic terminology connected with homosexuality, the concept of lesbianism in real life and the literary world and the reasons for wide-spread homophobia in the South. Based on the analysis of the works of two Southern lesbian writers, Rita Mae brown and Dorothy Allison, I characterize the way in which lesbianism was received in the South. Both authors are introduced in the opening chapters, including their works and their lives. In the main analysis I concentrate on the typical attributes and tradition of life in the South and how this contrasts with lesbianism. From the works of Rita Mae Brown I have chosen the novel Rubyfruit Jungle which was published in 1973 and became the most famous lesbian novel ever written. The second anyalzed work of Brown is her novel Alma Mater from 2001, but I do not exclude some others of her lesbian works such as In Her Day or Venus Envy. Dorothy Allison has written two novels, Bastard out of Carolina and Cavedweller, which are both part of the analysis. The lesbian protagonists of Rita Mae Brown are prototypical, they undergo coming out, visit gay bars and are full of revolutionary ideas. On the other hand Dorothy Allison experiments more and introduces her lesbian protagonists in atypical situations. The work tries to prove the existence of lesbian literature in the South and show its characteristic aspects.
