Práca je zameraná na analýzu vývoja zobrazenia vojny v amerických románoch v 19. storočí. Sústreďuje sa na rôzne aspekty ? obdobie, kedy diela vznikli, vojnové skúsenosti autorov, literárne vplyvy, a mieru realistickosti, ktorú pri opise vojny resp. boja jednotliví autori dosiahli. Podrobne sa zaoberám štyrmi autormi a ich dielami, James Fenimore Cooperom, Johnom Nealom, Johnom Williamom De Forestom a Stephenom Craneom. Od romantického poňatia vojny v Cooperových a Nealových dielach, kde bola miera realistickosti minimálna a vojna bola glorifikovaná sa v druhej polovici 19. storočia jej zobrazenie zmenilo. De Forest ju na základe vlastných vojnových skúseností zobrazuje ako záležitosť plnú špiny, bolesti a umierania a u Stephena Cranea je vojna a jej dopad na neskúseného nováčika zobrazený v tej najbrutálnejšj forme.The thesis focuses on the analysis of the portrayal of war in 19th century American novels. It deals with various aspects ? the period in which the novels were written, the actual war experience of individual authors, literary influences and approach to the realism of the battlefield. It analyses the novels of four authors, namely James Fenimore Cooper, John Neal, John William De Forest and Stephen Crane. The romantic portrayal of war in the works of Cooper and Neal, where war was glorified and the authors paid almost no attention to the battlefield realism changed in the second half of the 19th century. De Forest depicts the war as an affair full of dirt, pain and suffering and in Stephen Crane?s novel is war and its effect on the inexperienced recruit portrayed in the most brutal form.
