Tato práce je zaměřena na život a dílo taiwanského režiséra Hou Xiaoxiana. První část práce se bude zabývat samotným životem režiséra, obdobím taiwanské Nové vlny a prostředím, které nepochybně ovlivnilo jeho tvorbu. V samostatné kapitole bude dále rozebrán charakteristický styl jeho práce z hlediska techniky a vnímání obrazu, což jsou aspekty, kterými se liší od ostatních tvůrců. Druhá polovina práce se věnuje samostatným Houovým filmům rozděleným do tematických okruhů a období, ve kterých vznikaly. Filmy jsou uvedeny v chronologickém pořadí, přičemž nejrozsáhlejší část práce je věnována snímku Město smutku, jelikož tento snímek sklidil největší ohlas jak u taiwanských, tak u mezinárodních kritiků a je důležitý i z hlediska lepšího pochopení taiwanské historie. Dále jsou rozebírány filmy Čas žít a čas zemřít, Prach ve větru, Květy Šanghaje, Millennium Mambo, Café Lumi?re a jeho poslední film Let červeného balónku.In this thesis I focused on the life and work of Taiwanese director Hou Xiaoxian. First part of this thesis is dealing with the biography of the director, then I looked more in detail on the period of Taiwanese New Wave cinema in the film industry and the background, which undoubtedly inspired Hou Haoxian's life and work. In a separate chapter I introduced the characteristic style, technique and the perception of the image, that are the main aspects which make Hou Xiaoxian's work different from the works of other directors. Second half of this thesis is dealing with the separate analysis of Hou's films, divided into several sections according to the period in which they were produced. All the films are introduced in chronological order. The most extensive part is devoted to the film City of Sadness, because this film was widely accepted by the Taiwanese and other critics from all over the world. Moreover, this film is important for better and deeper understanding of Taiwanese history. The thesis also contains the analyses of these films: A Time to Live, A Time to Die, Dust in the Wind, Flowers of Shanghai, Millennium Mambo, Café Lumi?re and Hou's most recent film The Flight of the Red Balloon.
