The focus of this thesis is photography by artists born in mainland China after 1975. The author attempts to analyze themes repeatedly displayed in the works of the chosen generation of artists and simultaneously describe the social and historical context which influenced the photographers in using their selected themes. The main objective is to use the chosen photographical works to identify and illustrate the greatest issues which affect China´s current youth generation born after 1975. The paper will also contribute to the understanding of cultural influence and change during the period in which said generation grew up to their current way of thinking and behaviour. This cultural context is key in comprehending the reason behind certain social movements, and consequently the artistic ones that followed. There are three main parts to this paper. The first focuses on the development of Chinese photography starting in 1976 up to the present. Within this time frame, there are four distinct periods. The second part of this essay describes the chosen generation of photographers, along with the historical context and social background in which they were born and raised. Furthermore, it explains the criteria used in selecting these photographers for this work. The last section focuses on specific artists and their works. This work does not aim to categorise photographers or to evaluate their work from an artistic point of view, as the author´s expertise on the subject is not sufficient. Additionally, doing so would take away from the main purpose of this composition; the aim is not to comment on the photography itself, but rather to use the pictures selected to demonstrate the issues of a certain generation. The particular photos used were chosen by the author herself for the purpose of this thesis and do not necessarily represent the artist´s entire viewpoint.
